Cellular Biology Reflection:
Daniel Lieberman is a professor of evolutionary biology. In his book, (The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health and Disease) Lieberman talks about some of the noninfectious diseases that may result from our bodies not being well adapted to modern conditions. For example: anxiety, asthma, certain cancers, depression,etc...
Many diseases occur because our bodies are poorly adapted to the environments in which we live nowadays. Many people in our society have a very inactive lifestyle and that leads to problems like diabetes or heart disease. Because we have access to big quantities of sugar and carbs, we eat them more and humans naturally crave sweet foods. Our metabolisms are not able to cope with such high levels of sugar, so as a result, we get sick.
When you get stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. It releases sugar into the bloodstream in order for you to deal with whatever bad situation you are going through. Cortisol makes you want to bring more energy to cope again, therefore, activating a need to eat calorie-rich foods. People who go through stressful situations in an everyday basis have lives that contribute to higher levels of cortisol therefore, being more prone to sickness. When you are stressed you crave unhealthy foods. You also have a harder time sleeping, and when you have a harder time sleeping that elevates your levels of stress. If we continue to go through stressful situations every day, eventually it will lead to chronic stress which will make you anxious, ill, depressed, or overweight.
To add up, cortisol is a hormone in our bodies that we release when we are stressed which releases sugar into the bloodstream. Since we go through very stressful situations nowadays, we crave unhealthy foods to have more sugar in our blood in order to have enough energy.
We need to care for our bodies and remember how they work.We are still evolutioning very slowly and we need to consider how our bodies are being affected.
